Why Banks Outrank Your NBFC for Every Term That Matters
Search “personal loan interest rate” and you get HDFC, ICICI, SBI, then three aggregators. There is no tenth position worth having. The honest question is not how to beat them — it is which searches they are not built to answer.

YMYL is a different standard
Google classifies content that could affect a person’s financial wellbeing as Your Money or Your Life, and its Quality Rater Guidelines instruct evaluators to apply a “very high” E-E-A-T threshold — the strictest of any category.
In practice that means the things which work in other verticals do not transfer. Publishing more does not help if the author has no credentials. A link from a high-authority domain with no topical relevance to finance carries no YMYL authority signal, regardless of how good its metrics look in a backlink tool. That single fact invalidates most link-building budgets in this sector.
In finance, a link from an irrelevant high-authority domain is worth approximately nothing.
Why the incumbents hold the top
It is not that their SEO is better. It is that the ranking factors in this category are things they have and you do not.
Entity strength. HDFC Bank is an entity Google has decades of corroborating information about — regulatory filings, news coverage, Wikipedia, millions of brand searches. That is not a content problem you can out-write.
Topical authority at scale. A large bank’s domain covers every financial product, each with depth. Yours covers three.
Trust signals that are structurally unavailable. Branch networks, decades of operation, deposit insurance. These are real-world facts Google reads as trust indicators.
You will not win “personal loan”, “home loan interest rate” or “best credit card”. Any agency that proposes those as targets is either inexperienced or selling you a report.
The second problem nobody plans for
Below the banks sit the aggregators — BankBazaar, Paisabazaar and the rest. They out-publish entire marketing teams and they occupy the comparison queries where buying intent concentrates.
This is worth understanding properly, because the instinct is to compete with them on their own ground by producing comparison content at volume. You will lose. They have more writers, more data feeds and more links.
What they cannot do is give a specific answer to a specific situation. Their content is built to cover every case, which means it addresses no case precisely. That gap is your opening and it is the whole strategy.
What is actually winnable
Situation-specific queries
“Business loan for a proprietorship with two years of ITR”. “Home loan when the property has no OC”. “Loan against property for a self-employed applicant with irregular income”. These convert far better than generic terms and the aggregators cannot write them, because answering requires actual underwriting knowledge.
Rejection and problem queries
“Why was my loan application rejected”, “CIBIL score dropped after closing a loan”, “how to fix a credit report error”. High volume, enormous intent, and the incumbents avoid them because the honest answer sometimes reflects badly on lenders.
Geography and segment
A regional NBFC lending to a specific trade in a specific city has a claim no national player can match. “Working capital loan for textile traders in Surat” is winnable in a way that “working capital loan” never will be.
Process transparency
What documents are actually required, what the timeline really is, what happens at each stage. Banks publish sanitised versions. A smaller lender that publishes the real process earns trust and the long tail that comes with it.
AI assistant visibility
Worth separating from classic SEO. Only around 12 to 14% of URLs cited by AI engines rank in Google’s top ten for the same query, so the incumbents’ stranglehold does not transfer automatically. Structured, well-sourced, genuinely dated content has a route here that it does not have on the first page of Google. We have written about what actually drives AI citation separately.
Where compliance quietly breaks SEO
Three failures we see repeatedly, each of which is a regulatory problem first and a ranking problem second.
Naming the wrong lender. RBI’s digital lending guidelines require the actual lending entity to be identified. The most common mistake in fintech marketing is creative naming the fintech as the lender rather than the underlying NBFC partner, whose licence number should appear on the landing page. This is both a compliance exposure and an entity-confusion problem for Google.
Performance language. SEBI restricts returns projections and “guaranteed” claims across advisory and investment marketing. Any specific scheme mentioned in advertising needs full risk disclosure on the destination page. Pages written for conversion and corrected later tend to lose the specificity that made them rank.
Stale rates. A page showing an interest rate that is no longer offered is a compliance problem and a trust problem simultaneously. Rate pages need an owner and a review cadence, not a quarterly panic.
The pattern worth adopting: compliance review belongs in the content brief, not the final QA. A page reviewed at brief stage keeps its specificity. A page reviewed at publication stage gets hollowed out.
Building E-E-A-T you can evidence
E-E-A-T is not a score and cannot be bought. What it reduces to in this category is whether a reasonable person could verify who wrote this and why they would know.
- Named authors with real credentials — a SEBI registration number, a CA qualification, fifteen years in underwriting. Not “Team Content”
- Author pages that establish the person, linked from every article they write
- Your own regulatory identity published plainly — NBFC registration, licence numbers, registered address
- Citations to primary sources — RBI circulars, SEBI regulations, the actual notification rather than someone’s summary
- Visible review dates on anything containing a rate, a rule or a threshold
- Links from topically relevant finance domains — industry bodies, trade press, regulator-adjacent publications. Volume from irrelevant domains does nothing here
- A correction practice. When a rule changes, update and say so. Dated accuracy beats evergreen vagueness in the one category where being wrong has consequences
None of this is fast. In a category where Google applies its highest scrutiny, that is the point — the slowness is the barrier, and it protects you once you are through it.

Questions
Can a small NBFC outrank HDFC or ICICI for loan keywords?
For generic high-volume terms, no. Those are held by entity strength, topical authority and real-world trust signals accumulated over decades. What is winnable is situation-specific queries, rejection and problem queries, geographic and trade-segment terms, and process transparency content the incumbents avoid.
What does YMYL mean for finance SEO?
Google classifies money-related content as Your Money or Your Life and its Quality Rater Guidelines instruct evaluators to apply a 'very high' E-E-A-T threshold. In practice it means author credentials matter, primary-source citations matter, and links from domains with no topical relevance to finance carry no authority signal.
Why do aggregators like BankBazaar rank above us?
They out-publish entire marketing teams and occupy comparison queries. Competing with them on volume is a losing strategy. Their weakness is that content built to cover every case addresses no case precisely — situation-specific content is where a lender or advisory wins.
What is the most common compliance mistake in fintech marketing?
Running creative that names the fintech as the lender rather than the underlying NBFC partner. RBI's digital lending guidelines require the actual lending entity to be identified, with its licence number on the landing page. It is both a regulatory exposure and an entity-confusion problem for search.
Does AI search change anything for smaller financial brands?
Somewhat. Only around 12 to 14% of URLs cited by AI engines rank in Google's top ten for the same query, so incumbent dominance does not transfer automatically. Structured, well-sourced, dated content has a route to citation it does not have on Google's first page.
