Why ChatGPT Does Not Mention Your Business
Someone asks ChatGPT for the best agency, supplier or clinic in your category. It names three. You are not one of them, no analytics report will ever tell you it happened, and the fix is almost certainly not on your website.

The uncomfortable finding
Nearly every guide to AI visibility tells you to restructure your content, add schema and write clearer headings. That advice is not wrong. It is just the smaller half of the problem.
Research reported by eMarketer in January 2026 found that 85% of brand mentions in AI answers originate from third-party pages rather than the brand’s own domain. Separate analysis puts it a similar way: brands are roughly six and a half times more likely to be cited through review sites, forums and news coverage than through their own website.
So the page you are about to rewrite is, statistically, not where the model learned about you. It learned from everyone else.
You cannot optimise your way into an AI answer using only the pages you own.
Mentions beat links, by roughly three to one
Traditional SEO runs on links. AI visibility appears to run on something adjacent but distinct.
One 2026 analysis found that brand mentions correlate with AI citation probability at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks — roughly three times stronger. A mention is simply your name appearing in text, with or without a link attached. For years SEO treated those as worthless. For language models they are the primary signal.
The scale effect is steep. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions receive around ten times more AI visibility than those in the bottom quarter. This is not a gentle curve where a little effort buys a little visibility. It rewards reaching a threshold of being talked about.
There is a second-order effect worth knowing, because it is where the commercial value actually sits. AI referral traffic is still small — roughly 1% of total website traffic across industries. But brands cited in AI Overviews see about a 23% lift in branded search within thirty days. People ask an assistant, see your name, and then go and Google you. The assistant rarely sends the click. It creates the intent.
Where the mentions actually come from
If third-party pages carry the weight, the question becomes which ones.
Wikipedia and Reddit are the most frequently cited domains across AI Overviews and AI Mode, largely because of their information density and structured discussion. Reddit specifically carries measurable weight: brands mentioned ten or more times on Reddit in the trailing ninety days earn AI citations at 2.7 times the rate of brands with no Reddit presence.
Before anyone reads that as an instruction to go and spam Reddit — it is not, and it will not work. Reddit removes promotional accounts quickly and the mentions that count are other people discussing you. The usable version is narrower: be the kind of business people have reason to mention, and be present in the places where your category gets discussed honestly.
What that looks like in practice
Review platforms, industry directories and trade publications all appear in citation sources. For a professional services firm in India that means Clutch, GoodFirms, industry bodies and genuine trade coverage. For a product business it means retailer listings, comparison sites and review aggregators. None of this is new marketing. It is the old discipline of being covered, now with a second payoff.
Digital PR has quietly become the highest-leverage AI visibility activity, which is an awkward conclusion for an industry that spent a decade automating link acquisition.
What your own site still has to do
The 15% you do control is not nothing, and some of it is unusually cheap to fix.
Placement inside the page matters more than most people expect. Around 44% of all LLM citations are drawn from the first 30% of a page, which makes your opening paragraphs the highest-value real estate you have. If your answer to the question a page addresses sits in the conclusion, a model may never reach it.
Freshness matters too. AI platforms tend to cite content roughly 26% fresher than traditional search does — measured in one analysis at around 1,064 days old versus 1,432. An updated date on a genuinely revised page is worth more here than it is in classic SEO.
Format matters. Listicles, articles and product pages account for the largest share of citations across AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Data-backed guides carrying FAQ schema, verifiable statistics and structured headings are the format cited most consistently.
And the mechanical layer: your robots.txt must permit GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, or you have opted out of the entire discussion. We publish an llms.txt file as well — an emerging convention that gives crawlers a structured summary of a site.
Why it will not hold still
Set expectations before you start measuring, because this behaves nothing like rankings.
Across an analysis of 11.2 million AI citations spanning seven months, 68% of queries that produced citations in one month did not produce them the next. A citation is not a position you hold. It is closer to a coin that lands your way more often as your mention volume rises.
There is a further gap between being named and being linked. BrightEdge found ChatGPT mentions brands around 3.2 times more often than it cites them with a link — roughly 2.37 mentions per response against 0.73 actual citations. Your name can be doing substantial work in answers that send you no traffic and appear in no report.
This is why AI visibility needs its own measurement. Analytics will show you the 1% that clicks. It will never show you the answers where you were named and the person went to Google instead.
A plan you can start this month
In rough order of return. The first three are the ones that matter.
- Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the five questions a buyer would ask in your category. Record which brands get named. That is your baseline.
- Audit where your category is discussed — review sites, directories, forums, trade press — and count how many of them mention you at all.
- Build genuine presence on the two or three that matter most. For Indian B2B that usually means Clutch, GoodFirms and relevant industry bodies.
- Pursue real coverage. One trade publication article naming you is worth more here than twenty blog posts on your own site.
- Move your clearest answers into the opening third of each page.
- Add FAQ schema to pages answering real questions, and keep the visible questions and the markup identical.
- Confirm your
robots.txtallows GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. - Keep your most important pages genuinely updated — a revised date on unchanged content fools nobody.
- Re-run the prompts from step one monthly. Expect volatility; look at the trend over a quarter.
What this will not do
This will not produce meaningful referral traffic soon — AI referrals remain around 1% of sessions for most sites. It will not work quickly, because mention volume accumulates over quarters. And it cannot be bought: 90% of AI citations driving brand visibility come from earned and owned media rather than paid placement.
What it does buy is being in the set of three names an assistant offers when someone asks your category question. Only about 14% of brands currently have any AI visibility strategy at all, which is the entire opportunity.

Questions
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
Mostly through third-party sources rather than your own website. Research reported in early 2026 found 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from pages the brand does not control — review sites, forums, directories and news coverage. Brand mentions correlate with AI citation probability about three times more strongly than backlinks do.
Does optimising my website help AI visibility at all?
Yes, but it is the smaller half. Around 44% of LLM citations are drawn from the first 30% of a page, so putting clear answers early matters. Content freshness, FAQ schema and allowing GPTBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt all help. None of it substitutes for being mentioned elsewhere.
How much traffic does AI search actually send?
Not much yet — roughly 1% of total website traffic across industries, with ChatGPT accounting for the large majority of it. The more significant effect is indirect: brands cited in AI Overviews see about a 23% lift in branded search within thirty days. The assistant creates intent; Google gets the click.
Why does my brand appear in AI answers one week and not the next?
Because AI citations are volatile by nature. An analysis of 11.2 million citations over seven months found 68% of queries that generated citations in one month did not generate them the next. Judge progress over a quarter, not week to week.
Can I pay to appear in AI assistant answers?
Not in the organic answer. Around 90% of AI citations driving brand visibility originate from earned and owned media rather than paid placements. ChatGPT has advertising products, but those are labelled placements, not citations.
