Google Penalty Recovery

Traffic fell off a cliff and you want to know why and whether it comes back. The honest answer usually involves establishing first whether this is a penalty at all, because most suspected penalties turn out to be something else.

Search Engine Optimization

Being found on Google, in AI answers, on maps and in marketplaces.

Diagnosis
Misdiagnosis wastes months.

Most drops are not penalties

Manual actions are relatively rare and Google tells you about them in Search Console. If there is no message there, you do not have a manual action, whatever an agency has told you.

What people usually mean is algorithmic suppression — a core update reassessed your site and you came out worse. That is not a penalty and there is nothing to appeal. Recovery means addressing whatever the update now weights differently, which is a slower and less certain process.

And a meaningful share of suspected penalties are neither. A botched migration, a robots.txt change, a tracking break, seasonal variation, or a competitor who simply got better. We establish which of these applies before recommending anything, because treating the wrong cause costs months.

Is this you?
If none of these apply, this probably isn’t the service you need.

What kind of drop is it?

PatternLikely cause
Overnight drop, message in Search ConsoleManual action. Specific, appealable, usually the most tractable case.
Drop aligning with a known core update dateAlgorithmic reassessment. No appeal exists; recovery means addressing quality and relevance signals.
Drop starting a few weeks after a site changeMigration or technical fault rather than a penalty. Often substantially recoverable.
Gradual decline over many monthsCompetitive erosion or content decay, not a penalty.
Only some sections droppedTemplate or content-type specific issue rather than a site-wide action.
Traffic fell but rankings heldA tracking or analytics fault, or SERP layout change absorbing the clicks.

What’s included

Cause diagnosis

Correlating the drop against update dates, deploy logs, Search Console messages and technical changes, before assuming a penalty.

Manual action assessment

Establishing exactly what was flagged, what evidence supports it, and what a reconsideration request needs to demonstrate.

Backlink profile review

Identifying links that pose genuine risk, and disavowing selectively. Indiscriminate disavowal removes value alongside risk.

Content quality assessment

For algorithmic cases, evaluating the pages that lost visibility against what the update appears to reward.

Technical fault elimination

Ruling out migration damage, robots changes, canonical errors and rendering regressions before pursuing quality work.

Reconsideration requests

Drafting submissions that demonstrate the problem was addressed rather than asserting it was, where a manual action exists.

Rebuild roadmap

A sequenced plan for the underlying issues, since most algorithmic recovery is ordinary quality work done properly.

Honest prognosis

A written assessment of what we believe is recoverable, roughly how long, and what probably is not.

Questions

Can you guarantee recovery?

No. Some sites recover fully, many recover partially, some never return to previous levels — particularly where the previous levels depended on tactics that no longer work. We will give you our honest assessment before you commit.

How long does recovery take?

Manual actions can lift within weeks of a successful reconsideration request. Algorithmic recovery typically takes six to eighteen months and often needs a subsequent update to register the improvements.

Our previous agency bought links and we think that caused it.

Common, and diagnosable. If a manual action exists we work the disavow and reconsideration path. If it is algorithmic, disavowal alone rarely resolves it and the work becomes rebuilding genuine authority.

Should we just start on a new domain?

Occasionally the right answer, and a serious decision — you discard all accumulated authority and start from zero. We would only recommend it where the existing profile is severely compromised and recovery looks improbable.

How do we know it was a core update?

Update dates are public and we correlate your traffic against them. If your drop lines up precisely with a known update, that is strong evidence. If it does not, look elsewhere.
