How to Check Whether AI Assistants Know Your Business
No analytics report tells you when an assistant recommended three companies and you were not among them. The only way to find out is to ask it yourself — properly, in a way you can repeat and compare. Here is the method we use.
In this article
Why analytics cannot tell you this
If an assistant names three suppliers and you are not one of them, nothing is logged anywhere you can see. There is no impression, no click, no entry in Search Console. The loss is invisible by construction.
It is worse than that. ChatGPT mentions brands roughly 3.2 times more often than it cites them with a link — about 2.37 mentions per response against 0.73 citations. So even when you are named, most of the time no traffic follows and no report records it.
This is why the audit has to be manual. You are measuring something that leaves no trace.
The answers where you were not mentioned are the ones that cost you, and they are the ones you will never see.
Step one: write the prompts a buyer would use
The most common mistake is asking the assistant about yourself. “What do you know about CoreWeb Technologies?” tells you almost nothing useful, because you have handed it the answer.
Write the questions someone asks before they know you exist. Five is enough, and they should cover different stages:
- Category and place — “Best SEO agency in Thane for a real estate developer”
- Problem-first — “My project pages are not ranking for their own names. Who can fix that?”
- Comparison — “How do I choose between SEO agencies in Mumbai?”
- Specific service — “Who does technical SEO for large ecommerce sites in India?”
- Qualification — “What should I ask an SEO agency before hiring them?”
That last one matters more than it looks. If the assistant’s answer to “what should I ask” comes from a competitor’s article, that competitor is setting the criteria you will be judged against.
Step two: run them across four assistants
Run all five prompts through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity separately. Together these account for around 99% of measurable AI referrals, and they do not share sources — only about 11% of cited domains appear on more than one.
Three rules that make the results usable:
- Use a logged-out or temporary session. Chat history personalises answers. If you have discussed your own business in that account, the result is contaminated.
- Do not refine the prompt. Ask once, record what comes back. A buyer does not iterate until they find you.
- Note the sources, not just the names. Where the assistant pulled from matters more than who it named, because that tells you where to go next.
Step three: record it so it is comparable
A note in a document is useless in three months. Use a sheet with one row per prompt-and-platform pair — five prompts across four assistants gives twenty rows — and these columns:
- Were you mentioned at all? Yes or no
- Position in the list, if named
- Which competitors were named
- Which sources were cited
- Date
The date column is not bureaucracy. Across 11.2 million citations over seven months, 68% of queries that produced citations in one month did not produce them the next. A single run tells you very little. The same twenty rows repeated monthly tell you a great deal.
Step four: read the result honestly
Four outcomes, each meaning something different.
Never mentioned anywhere. The common result, and not a crisis. It means your brand has not accumulated enough third-party presence — around 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from pages you do not own. The work is directories, reviews and coverage, not your website.
Mentioned on one platform only. Expected, given the 11% overlap. Note which, and check whether that platform matters for your buyers. In B2B, Claude reached 18.5% of measurable AI referrals in 2026 while ChatGPT fell to 62.6%.
Mentioned, but the sources are places you do not control. This is the most actionable outcome. The cited directory or review site is one you can usually get listed on within a week.
Named alongside credible competitors. You are in the consideration set. Now the question is ordering, which comes down to mention volume — brands in the top quarter for web mentions get roughly ten times the AI visibility of the bottom quarter.
What to do with what you find
- List every source the assistants cited across all twenty rows. Mark the ones you could appear on.
- Claim and complete profiles on those first. A directory already cited by an assistant is a direct route in.
- Check your own pages answer the prompts clearly in the opening third — roughly 44% of LLM citations come from the first 30% of a page.
- Confirm
robots.txtpermits GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Blocking them opts you out entirely. - Pursue genuine third-party coverage. It is slower than anything else here and it is the only thing that compounds.
- Repeat the twenty rows monthly. Judge the trend across a quarter, never a single run.
Being realistic about what this is worth
AI referral traffic is still around 1% of sessions for most businesses, so this is not where your next ten customers come from. The reason to do it anyway is that brands cited in AI Overviews see roughly a 23% lift in branded search within thirty days — the assistant creates the intent and Google collects the click — and only about 14% of brands have any AI visibility strategy at all.
Twenty minutes with a spreadsheet puts you ahead of most of your competitors on a channel that is still forming.

Questions
How do I check if ChatGPT knows about my business?
Ask it the questions a buyer would ask before they know you exist, not questions about you by name. Use a logged-out or temporary session so chat history does not personalise the answer, ask once without refining, and record which brands and sources appear.
Why should I test four AI assistants instead of just ChatGPT?
Because they draw on largely separate sources — only about 11% of cited domains appear on more than one platform. ChatGPT sends the most traffic overall, but Claude reached 18.5% of measurable B2B AI referrals in 2026.
How often should I repeat this audit?
Monthly, and judge the trend over a quarter. An analysis of 11.2 million citations found 68% of queries that produced citations in one month did not produce them the next, so a single run tells you very little.
My business was not mentioned at all. Is that bad?
It is the most common result and it is not a crisis. It usually means you lack third-party presence rather than that your website is wrong — around 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from pages the brand does not own.
Does appearing in AI answers actually bring customers?
Rarely as direct traffic — AI referrals are about 1% of sessions for most sites. The measurable effect is indirect: brands cited in AI Overviews see roughly a 23% lift in branded search within thirty days.
